USA Luge

An Olympic Sport You Can Do – Forbes.com

Imagine sitting on a sled the size of a bath mat while wearing head-to-toe spandex. Your eyes lock on the long, curvy track of ice that lies straight ahead. You grip the metal handle on either side of you just a bit tighter. Your heart thumps as you envision a series of grisly crashes. But eventually you push off the handles, lie back and succumb to the forces of physics.

Within seconds you hit 50mph and flop around like a rag doll through each sharp bend. A straightaway turns out to be a deceptive jaunt that you bump with both sides of your body, but the battering goes barely noticed because of the huge curve visible beyond. It slingshots the sled farther down the track.

I love watching the luge and bobsled events during the Olympics. It looks like so much fun! Who didn’t like slides growing up. Well this is one giant, ice covered slide where you’re guaranteed to not get stuck half way down…. If everything goes well, that is. So I was amazed when I saw this article. It turns out, for $2000 I too can experience the rush of the luge! The facility located in Lake Placid, NY offers training camps and professional training for those adventurous to take to the ice.

And I can’t help wondering. Could something like this exist on Pikes Peak? How fun would it be to hike up Barr Trail located in the Manitou Springs Real Estate area and then sled back down the mountain!  Now that is an activity befitting Pikes Peak!

The vision at Banning Lewis Ranch – new homes Colorado Springs

The vision for Banning Lewis Ranch is to be different in ways that you can feel immediately. Instead of designing this place as just another development, we’re designing it to be something truly special. We want to provide more thoughtful ways of connecting people with the land, with each other, and with all of the pleasures and necessities of everyday life. And in the process, our goal is to create a deeper, richer sense of community.

The Banning Lewis Ranch real estate area is a different kind of community, offering brand new homes for sale in Colorado Springs.  It is one of the few new home communities that have survived the housing bubble, and their success is not by accident.  From the start, Banning Lewis Ranch was envisioned to enrich the variety and character of new homes available in the Colorado Springs real estate area.  The community itself is planned around parkland, walking trails and a vibrant community center, instead of residential lots as the focus.  The pride taken in developing this new community is clearly evident when you drive through the neighborhood.  And it is sure to show itself again through the pride felt by the Banning Lewis Ranch residents as they enjoy their new homes and friendly community.

Detroit Auto Show

The Year’s Most Important New Cars – Forbes.com

At the Detroit auto show, carmakers pin their hopes for recovery on small cars with big aspirations.

Of the hundreds of cars on display this week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit none has more riding on it than the little Ford Focus.

Redesigned for the 2012 model year, it’s the flagship of Ford Motor’s ( F – news – people ) new small-car lineup in the U.S. and a crucial test of Chief Executive Alan R. Mulally’s strategy to develop vehicles that will sell in every market of the world.

Along with the recently introduced Ford Fiesta subcompact, and a new portfolio of small cars from General Motors, the Focus is also a test of whether American carmakers can finally build great small cars profitably.

2009 was a tough year for the car industry. So when I heard the Detroit Auto Show was taking place this week, I thought I would check out this year’s headlining cars. The new Ford Focus definitely caught my eye. It appears that Ford is doing a spectacular job at reinventing itself for the new economy. If you remember, they were the only big domestic car company that did not ask for help from the government to cope with the changing sales environment. I am so happy to see them coming out strong in 2010 with concept cars that make sense for today’s automobile consumers.

Although most would say that Colorado is truck country, there is certainly a market for smaller, environmentally responsible cars too. Most Colorado Springs homes for sale are located within suburban or urban areas where driving a smaller car not only makes more sense, but is also much more enjoyable. And if you’ve ever driven through the North Cheyenne Canon park located just northwest of the Broadmoor real estate area you know what I mean!

Business of Art Center

Filed under: Colorado Springs Events, Neighborhoods, Southwest — Heather @ January 6th, 2010

Welcome

The Business of Art Center is designed to:
  • Facilitate the development of the artistic and business skills of artists by providing subsidized studio space, art classes, workshops, and business instruction; which will enable the artists to earn a living from their art work.
  • Increase public knowledge of art processes, art forms and issues through art exhibitions, lectures, tours, and demonstrations focusing on the tools, methods, and history of the art form.
  • Provide a stimulating creative environment which will contribute to the understanding and pleasure of art.

Did you know that Colorado Springs has a very active arts center? The BAC has provided hundreds of artists with not only studio and gallery space, but also eduction programs. They provide the backbone to the Colorado Springs arts community and are responsible for numerous art events throughout the Colorado Springs real estate area.

Located in the Manitou real estate area, the Business of Art Center offers low cost studio and gallery space to up and coming local artists, while also providing mentor-ship and education opportunities. The BAC offers several services but their main goals include teaching artists about the world of business, how to market and sell their art, and how to advance their careers in the arts. Along with catering to the arts community, the BAC also provides a couple of venues that are available for public meetings, lectures, and performance space. The Downtown real estate area is certainly anchored by our strong arts community and it surely would not be a success without the Business of Art Center.
