Pikes Peak Urban Gardens, a non-profit organization, was formed in the winter of 2008 in response to a need in the Pikes Peak region. At that time Denver had over 70 community gardens. In 2007, as far as we knew, there were only three community gardens in the Colorado Springs area: Bear Creek Community gardens on the west side of town, Old Farm Community Gardens on the east side and perhaps one other. We are now seeing record numbers of people interested in growing their own food.Mission: “Cultivating community through organic gardening and sustainable urban farm projects in the Pikes Peak region”.
In the past two seasons PPUG has help establish six community gardens, one large demonstration garden, two micro-farmers markets, two urban farms, and has offered numerous educational outreach programs to schools and community groups.
It days like today that I’m drawn to thoughts of spring. And with background in landscape architecture, thoughts of spring lead me to thoughts of landscaping and gardening. Colorado Springs residents are fortunate to have several community gardens available for your organic gardening needs. In fact the Pikes Peak Foundation has just recently begun quite a campaign for promoting several new gardens throughout the Colorado Springs real estate area. In just the past year, they have more than doubled the number of community gardens and continue to create and expand our facilities.
I love gardening….some might say that it’s “in my blood”. I also live in a condo. I love the fact that I still have the opportunity to grow vegetables and flowers. And the best part is that no matter where you live in the Colorado Springs Real Estate area, there will be a community garden nearby.
